Custom Software

Custom software development

We design and build software around how your business actually works, for the operations that no packaged product fits. Full ownership of code and infrastructure from day one, a first release in 6–12 weeks, and support that continues long after launch.

What we build

The case for custom software is narrower than most agencies admit. If a packaged product covers your process, buy it. Custom earns its cost in three situations: when the process is your competitive advantage and standardising it would erase that advantage; when licence and customisation costs for off-the-shelf already exceed a build; and when the work is currently held together by spreadsheets and people remembering things. We start by working out which of those you are in — and tell you if you are in none of them.

Operational systems

The system your business runs on day to day, modelled on your real workflow rather than a generic template.

Internal tools

Admin consoles, dashboards and workflow tools that replace the spreadsheets your team maintains by hand.

Integration layers

The connective software between systems that were never designed to talk to each other, removing manual re-entry between them.

Legacy replacement

Phased replacement of ageing systems, run in parallel and migrated in stages rather than in one risky cutover.

Data and reporting

A single reporting layer over data currently scattered across several systems and spreadsheets.

Automation

Removing the repetitive manual steps between systems — the work that consumes hours and generates most of the errors.

Who this is for

  • Businesses whose core process is genuinely unusual for their industry
  • Companies quoted heavily to customise an off-the-shelf product
  • Operations running on spreadsheets that only one person fully understands
  • Teams maintaining several systems that do not talk to each other

How a custom build runs

  1. Scoping call and plan

A free scoping call, then a clear written plan within 48 hours covering what to build, what to buy and what to skip — including the parts you should not pay us to build.

  2. Design against reality

We work from your actual workflow, edge cases included. The exceptions your team handles manually are usually where the real requirements hide.

  3. Ship in phases

A useful first release in 6–12 weeks, then growth release by release, with weekly demos so you always know where things stand.

  4. Run and improve

Every project includes a warranty period, and most clients continue on a care plan covering monitoring, backups, security updates and steady improvement.

Integrations we handle regularly

Accounting packages Booking channels Payment gateways POS hardware Legacy databases Government and regulatory portals where APIs exist Messaging platforms

Where a system has no API, we build the bridge ourselves.

What it costs

We quote per project after the scoping call, because an honest number depends on scope rather than a price list. These are the factors that move it most:

  • Scope of the first release — we deliberately keep this small
  • Number of integrations with systems you already run
  • How much existing data must be migrated and cleaned
  • Whether mobile apps are needed alongside the web system

Engagements run as a fixed-scope project, a dedicated team on monthly contract, or an ongoing support & care plan.

Questions

Do we own the code?

Yes, completely. Source code, repositories, infrastructure accounts, data and documentation are all in your name from day one. If you ever leave, you take everything with you — there is no lock-in by design.

How do you keep a custom project from overrunning?

By keeping the first release deliberately small, demoing weekly, and phasing everything else. Overruns are usually a scoping failure rather than an engineering one — a large first release with a distant deadline is the pattern that fails.

What happens if we want to change direction mid-project?

Phased delivery is designed for exactly that. Because work ships in short cycles, changing priority for the next phase costs little. Changing a foundational data model after six months costs a great deal, which is why we settle that early.
